The Art of Journaling

Old Florida by Delilah
Old Florida by Delilah, painting by Delilah Smith
About This Painting: I painted this in the Heritage Village in Florida. I am trying something new for me traveling journalism with paints.
This is where I was painting:

I am using a Kilimanjaro 12x9 journal with 140 lb cold-pressed watercolor paper in it for my journal.

I like the spiral binding because it flips easily over and there is a plain sheet of paper in between for notes. There are 20 sheets in the Paint Book and you can paint on both sides. With sheet of paper between each sheet if it is still a little damp when you close it the next painting is protected.

Watercolor Journaling

Harbor Side
Harbor Side, painting by Delilah Smith
About This Painting: Today I was painting " en Plein air" with  Don Getz a well know watercolor journalism artist who is traveling the US painting small towns as he travel.

We are painting at Indian Rocks Fl this week and having a ball.

Don is able to balance his work in one hand and paint. I have to use both and a clip to keep the paper from blowing in the wind.

Air Line travel has become so difficult that I decided that I need to fins a different way to capture my travels. So I am giving this a try. Be doing these journal and taking photos I think I can then go back to the studio and paint larger works in oils.

About This Painting: A few years ago I did the 12 days of Christmas and painted a painting similar to this. I decided to do another one and make it larger then the first one. I wanted it to have expressive brush work and an abstract quality to it.

About This Painting: I had such a hard time finding marbles I have been adding them to many of my still life set ups. In this painting I wanted to us mostly grays. The challenge was to be able to make the spoon stand out with the use of so much gray.

When the Cows Come home is it time to Milk?

| 23 November, 2012 09:02

When The Cows Come Homw
When The Cows Come Homw, painting by Delilah Smith
About This Painting: I'm not sure what started the phrase, When the cows come home or Till the Cows come Home but growing up on the farm at a certain time in the evening the cows would start to wander out of the pasture and up the lane to the barn to be milked. There always seemed to be a leader of the band of wayward cows and the rest just followed, kind of like kids who need a little direction in their lives.

You know who you are Make you r art shout

| 13 October, 2012 08:35

Art by Delilah

At the center of your being you have the answer; you know who you are and you know what you want.”
- Lao-tzu (lived during the 6th Century BCE), Philosopher of Anchient China
You know the answer to the question. What do you want from your art career.Think, Is it money, recognition ,to become better at your medium? You may not have written it down or shared it with anyone not even your closest friend  Today is the day to start your journal a secret place where you put down those hopes, fears and dreams. Write it down in ink, pick a color, and start. Writing them down makes it real. You know who you are and now you have put down in ink what you want.
I use green ink, it makes it more fun, For me at the center of who I am is this happy person who paints because she love it.
Now that you have written down what you want lets start a path to getting there. Baby steppes. Pink ones, blue one oh-la-la green ones. Yes, babies fall down, but they get back up. Remember it's not how many times you fall down( In artistic terms get turned down for a show, gallery, didn't make the sale), it happens to the best of us, it's how many times you get back up. Last one standing Wins.
Baby steps and we will soon be running. Race you to the finish line.
Artist Hugs to all of us runners.

Naturally Fresh Cherries
Naturally Fresh Cherries, painting by Delilah Smith
About This Painting: The Michigan Cherry crop got hit by an early frost this year but we were luck to get fresh cherries from Washington State. There were still plenty of cherries at the local road side fruit stands. If you enjoy cherries you might like one of my larger cherry paintings.

How the Jack -o-lantern got it's name

| 16 September, 2012 09:20

Pumpkin Orange
Pumpkin Orange, painting by Delilah Smith
About This Painting: It is almost time to make a happy face on a pumpkin. when we were kids we would light a candle and put inside now I put one of those small battery tea lights. I think they are safer. If you still like to put candles in your cubby tubby pumpkin jack-o-lanterns here are some really detail instructions on how to light them.

When I was writing this I began to wonder where the name Jack-o-lantern came from, Here is one story:

The Legend of "Stingy Jack"
People have been making jack-o'-lanterns at Halloween for centuries. The practice originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed "Stingy Jack." According to the story, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. True to his name, Stingy Jack didn't want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to keep the money and put it into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form. Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. The next year, Jack again tricked the Devil into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree's bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised Jack not to bother him for ten more years.
